Australia: An attacker who fatally stabbed five people in a Sydney mall was shot dead by police in the city’s beachside suburb of Bondi. The incident led to a chaotic scene as hundreds fled the area.

A knife-wielding assailant was shot by a police officer after attacking nine people at the busy Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre. The attacker, who was killed by police, left five victims dead, according to New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, stating that the motive behind the violence was not yet known. He described the incident as a horrific act of violence that targeted innocent people going about their daily shopping routine.

Australia, known for its strict gun and knife laws, rarely experiences such violent attacks. The incident unfolded in the mall around 4 p.m. (0600 GMT), prompting a swift response from emergency services.

Eight people, including a child, were taken to the hospital, according to a New South Wales Ambulance spokesperson. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of chaos and fear, with one describing a mother comforting her baby, who had been stabbed.

Witnesses also reported hearing shots fired, and one eyewitness described the police officer’s actions in shooting the attacker as necessary to prevent further harm. Social media posts captured the panic as crowds fled the mall, with police and emergency services quickly arriving at the scene.

The incident in Bondi has shocked Australians, with authorities working to understand the attacker’s motives and ensure the safety of the public in the aftermath of this tragic event.
