(Karachi): Vice-Chancellor DUHS, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy has stated that there are more than 50,000 patients worldwide suffering from “Sarcoma,” a cancer that originates from bones and soft tissues. It is necessary to raise awareness to prevent this deadly disease. The general public needs to understand that in the case of any swelling in any part of the body, instead of resorting to home remedies, they should consult a reputable doctor. Particularly, medical professionals associated with the medical field should be informed about this risk beforehand.
These statements were made by them while addressing through a video link from the seminar arranged by Orthopedic Department, Dow University of Health Sciences, on “Sarcoma Awareness Week” at Arag Auditorium. Principal DMC, Professor Saba Sohail, Professor Anees Uddin Bhatti, Professor Noor Muhammad Somro, Professor Badr-ud-Din Sahito, Professor Maratib Ali, Professor Ata-at Hussain, and Professor Shahid Noor also delivered speeches at the seminar, which was attended by a large number of teachers and students, including the Orthopedic Faculty.
Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy mentioned that July has been designated as “Sarcoma Month” internationally, during which awareness about Sarcoma is being raised. The Dow University of Health Sciences has decided to observe the first week of July as “Sarcoma Awareness Week” to ensure that Health professionals and the general public are timely and properly informed about this disease. They stated that despite Sarcoma not being a very common cancer, it is essential to bring attention to its effects. It is a different type of tumor that causes swelling in connective tissues such as bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the body. They stated that the Dow University is committed to taking steps to prevent Sarcoma at the initial stage and will not leave individuals afflicted with this deadly disease alone. Professor Saba Sohail mentioned that the primary objective of spreading awareness is to ensure that the affected person reaches the appropriate treatment center where they can receive immediate and effective care. Professor Anees Uddin Bhatti added that by diagnosing Sarcoma at the early stages, not only can we tackle the challenges posed by this disease in our country, but we can also provide meaningful assistance to individuals affected by it. Additionally, Professor Badr-ud-Din Sahito shed light on the 10 years of services provided by Orthopedic Department, Civil Hospital Karachi and Dow University of Health Sciences. At the end of the ceremony, shields were also presented to the guests by the organizers.
