Trump made the announcement through a post on Truth Social and said the meeting would take place in Qatar on Tuesday. However, he did not identify the participants.
Washington Confirms High-Level Engagement
Shortly after Trump’s statement, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said US envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner would travel to Doha for high-level meetings.
In addition, a diplomat familiar with the discussions told AFP that US and Iranian officials planned to meet in Doha to discuss implementation of the agreement signed earlier this month. The diplomat also said both sides created communication channels to reduce tensions after recent military incidents.
Iran Rejects Reports of Technical Negotiations
Despite the US announcement, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi rejected reports that technical talks would begin this week.
Nevertheless, US officials indicated that broader negotiations would continue despite recent military exchanges and tensions in the Gulf region.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Central Issue
The latest diplomatic developments followed renewed tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.
Iran and Oman recently held talks on future management of the waterway after the agreement between Washington and Tehran. Iranian officials said both sides exchanged views on current and future arrangements.
The route carries a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Therefore, any disruption could affect international energy markets.
Shipping and Regional Concerns Continue
Shipping activity slowed during the weekend after security incidents in the area affected vessel movement.
At the same time, Iran warned that attempts to bypass its preferred shipping corridor could increase regional tensions. Officials also maintained that management decisions should remain consistent with existing agreements.
Diplomatic Uncertainty Ahead
Although Washington signalled progress, Tehran continued to question reports of formal negotiations.
As a result, attention now shifts to Doha, where upcoming discussions may determine whether recent understandings lead to a broader diplomatic breakthrough.
