Shakib Al Hasan‘s Residence Targeted in Magura Attack
The ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan was attacked by a mob after he appeared in the first public media interaction of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since her 2024 removal from power.
Police reported that attackers smashed windows and hurled petrol bombs at Shakib Al Hasan‘s residence in Magura, located around 170 kilometres southwest of Dhaka, on Wednesday evening. A fire broke out on the upper floor of the unoccupied house, though no injuries were reported during the incident.
The attack occurred hours after Shakib Al Hasan, who served as a former Awami League lawmaker, participated in a virtual event organized by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in New Delhi. During the session, Hasina vowed to return to Bangladesh despite facing a death sentence.
Hasina Vows Return During Delhi Presser Supported by Shakib Al Hasan
Addressing the media virtually from New Delhi, Hasina delivered her first public address since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024 following a student-led uprising. During her speech, she emphasized her resolve to return to her homeland regardless of the political or legal consequences.
“I will return to my people,” Hasina stated during the interaction. “I know they may imprison or kill me, but I still have to go back.”
The former prime minister also called for lifting the ban on the Awami League, which was barred from political activities after her removal from office. Shakib Al Hasan, elected to parliament as an Awami League candidate in January 2024, has remained outside Bangladesh since the political upheaval. He currently faces multiple legal investigations, including allegations of murder, embezzlement, fraud, and money laundering.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Hasina’s public appearance from Indian soil, describing it as an affront to national sovereignty and warning that it could negatively impact bilateral relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.
Hasina, 78, has been residing in New Delhi since August 2024. The Bangladeshi interim government has formally requested her extradition, while Indian authorities stated the request remains under legal review.
In November 2025, Bangladesh’s war crimes tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia over a deadly crackdown on the 2024 student protests — charges she has consistently rejected as politically motivated.
