Lake America Appears on Apple Maps After Trump’s Lake Ontario Renaming Order

Apple has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America on the web version of Apple Maps for users in the United States.

The change followed an executive order by US President Donald Trump that renamed the lake for US federal use.

Apple made the update on Tuesday. The move came shortly after Alphabet changed the name on Google Maps for users in the United States.

Apple Maps Adopts New US Name

Apple confirmed that US users will now see Lake America after the US Geographic Names Information System, known as GNIS, changed the official federal listing.

The company will continue to display Lake Ontario for users in Canada.

Users in other parts of the world will see both Lake Ontario and Lake America.

Apple followed a similar approach after Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America.

The latest change highlights the growing role of major technology companies in disputes involving geography, politics and government policy.

Canada Keeps the Lake Ontario Name

Trump’s executive order applies to US federal usage.

The order does not control how Canada, international organisations or other countries refer to the lake.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would not change the historic name.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also rejected the proposed change.

Lake Ontario has carried its current name for more than 400 years.

New York shares a border with the lake on the US side.

Canada contains around 52 per cent of Lake Ontario’s surface area. New York contains the remaining portion.

Google Also Changes Its Maps

Google changed the lake’s name for US users before Apple made its update.

The two technology companies previously changed their mapping services after Trump’s January 2025 order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Both companies used different labels depending on the user’s location.

The latest mapping change follows the same geographical approach.

US users see the new federal designation.

Canadian users continue to see the traditional name.

Users in other countries can see both names.

Poll Shows Opposition to Renaming

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that a majority of Americans opposed Trump’s recent decision to raise taxes on imported Canadian goods.

The poll also showed opposition to the order renaming Lake Ontario.

The renaming dispute has added to wider tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

Trump has repeatedly suggested since early 2025 that Canada could become the 51st US state.

Canadian leaders have firmly rejected the idea.

The Lake America change now places another historic geographical name at the centre of a political dispute.

While Apple and Google have updated their services for US users, Canada and other authorities continue to recognise Lake Ontario.
