House of the Dragon: Rhaenyra Claims the Iron Throne in Season 3 Episode 2
The latest episode delivers major turning points across Westeros as alliances shift and the Targaryen civil war enters a new phase.
Rhaenyra takes the Iron Throne as the conflict in Westeros intensifies.
The second episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 ends with a defining moment in the Targaryen civil war as Rhaenyra finally takes control of the Iron Throne, although the conflict itself remains far from resolved.
The episode opens after the Battle of the Gullet, with Baela returning to Dragonstone carrying the body of Jacaerys. Mourning the loss of her second son, Rhaenyra begins to question whether the pursuit of power justifies the sacrifices made throughout the war.
Her determination returns following Daemon’s arrival from Harrenhal. During their conversation, he urges her not to allow those who died to have done so in vain and shares his visions connected to the prophecy known as the Song of Ice and Fire.

Elsewhere, Rhaena attempts to hide her connection to Sheepstealer after the dragon’s involvement in the battle draws attention. On Driftmark, Alyn, Baela and Addam rescue Corlys Velaryon, who later formally recognises Alyn with the Velaryon family name.
At the same time, Aegon and Larys continue to evade capture after escaping fighting involving Triarchy forces. Aegon insists on travelling to Rook’s Rest in search of Ser Criston Cole.
In King’s Landing, Alicent quietly prepares the city for Rhaenyra’s arrival with support from Commander Largent. She also reflects on earlier decisions and tells Helaena she regrets placing Aegon on the throne while expressing hope for a different future.
As events unfold at Harrenhal, Aemond arrives and confronts Simon Strong before suffering injuries and crossing paths with Alys Rivers.
The episode closes with Rhaenyra entering King’s Landing and receiving support from the Gold Cloaks. After ordering the executions of Otto Hightower and Lord Jasper, she takes her seat on the Iron Throne. Moments later, Alicent and Helaena arrive, leaving the next stage of the struggle uncertain.
The eight-episode season continues weekly on Sundays on HBO, with the finale scheduled for August 9, 2026.
