ISLAMABAD, April 25: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the return of spectators for the final of the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), reversing an earlier decision to hold the match behind closed doors due to austerity measures, officials said on Saturday.

The announcement was made by Interior Minister and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who said he had formally requested the prime minister to allow fans back into the stadium for the tournament’s final match.

In a post on social media platform X, Naqvi said the prime minister had initially been inclined to maintain restrictions due to nationwide austerity policies aimed at reducing fuel consumption. However, following appeals from franchise owners, the decision was revised in favour of allowing public attendance.

Naqvi thanked the prime minister for what he described as a “gracious approval,” saying the move would enhance the atmosphere of the PSL final and reconnect fans with live cricket action.

Policy Reversal Amid Austerity Measures

Earlier this season, the PCB had announced that PSL matches would be played without spectators as part of broader government cost-control measures linked to fuel conservation policies. The tournament was also restricted to fewer venues, including only Karachi and Lahore, instead of the originally planned six cities.

The PSL 11 edition had been scheduled across Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Multan, Peshawar, and Faisalabad, but logistical and economic considerations led to a revised format.

Officials linked the austerity drive to wider global energy pressures, including fluctuations in international fuel markets and regional geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains.

Tournament Update

On the field, competition remains intense as teams battle for playoff positions. Islamabad United secured a strong eight-wicket win at the National Bank Stadium, strengthening their position in the playoff race.

Meanwhile, Peshawar Zalmi continues to dominate the league standings with eight wins in nine matches, maintaining its position at the top of the table.

In contrast, Karachi Kings have struggled this season, slipping to the lower half of the standings after a series of defeats.

Final Expected Boost in Attendance

The decision to allow spectators is expected to significantly enhance the atmosphere of the PSL final, which is one of the most-watched sporting events in Pakistan each year. Cricket officials believe fan presence will restore the traditional energy of the tournament’s climax after earlier restrictions.

The PCB is expected to announce ticketing arrangements and security protocols in the coming days.
