Disability Quota: Visually Impaired Protesters Demand Jobs and Unpaid Salaries in Karachi

KARACHI: Disability Quota dominated a protest in Karachi on Thursday as unemployed visually impaired persons demanded government jobs under the five per cent quota and the immediate release of their 19 months of pending salaries.

Members of the Blind Action Committee marched from the Karachi Press Club towards the Chief Minister House to press the Sindh government to fulfil its commitments. Police blocked their march by placing barriers at the entrance to the Red Zone and deployed a heavy security contingent to prevent the protesters from moving forward.

Blind Action Committee leader Shabbir Rajput led the demonstration and urged the government to immediately implement the five per cent disability quota across Sindh. He said visually impaired people had waited too long for employment opportunities and deserved equal access to government jobs.

Protesters said their demands represented visually impaired people from Karachi to Kashmore. They called on the authorities to begin recruitment under the disability quota without further delay and release salaries that have remained unpaid for 19 months.

“Our only demand is that the government starts recruitment under the disability quota and pays our pending salaries,” the protesters said. They added that prolonged delays had created severe financial hardships and left many families struggling to meet their daily needs.

The demonstrators warned that they would continue their protest until the government accepted their demands and took practical steps to address their concerns.

After negotiations and police intervention, the protesters returned to the Karachi Press Club, where they continued their demonstration and reiterated their call for immediate government action.
