Washington, D.C. — A high-profile evening at the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner descended into chaos on Saturday night after an armed gunman opened fire on Secret Service personnel, triggering a rapid evacuation of President Donald Trump, senior U.S. officials, and hundreds of guests inside the Washington Hilton hotel.
The first signs of trouble emerged around 8:35 p.m. local time, when attendees inside the packed ballroom heard unexplained thuds followed by an unsettling silence that quickly escalated into panic.
Moments later, the doors to the ballroom burst open as Secret Service agents, local police, and tactical units rushed inside, transforming the formal dinner—attended by roughly 2,600 journalists, officials, and guests in tuxedos and evening gowns—into a scene of disorder and emergency response.
Sudden Evacuation of Top U.S. Officials
President Trump was seated at the head table alongside First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials when the security response began. Witnesses described agents swiftly pulling the Vice President and cabinet members from their seats and forcing several officials to the ground as a protective measure.
Cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Homeland Security officials, were reportedly pushed beneath tables or escorted rapidly out of the room as security teams moved to establish control.
Heavily armed officers entered the ballroom in tactical formation, weapons drawn, as confused guests dropped to the floor or took shelter under tables and chairs.
Gunman Fired from Inside Hotel Complex
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect had allegedly moved through a security checkpoint on an upper floor of the hotel before firing a shotgun that struck a Secret Service agent stationed nearby. The agent was injured before the suspect was subdued and arrested.
Authorities identified the suspect as a California-based individual believed to be staying at the hotel. Investigators are treating the case as a lone-actor incident, although the motive remains under review.
The Washington Hilton, a venue frequently used for major political gatherings, is the same hotel where a 1981 assassination attempt targeted President Ronald Reagan outside the premises.
“I Thought It Was a Tray,” Says Trump
Speaking later at the White House, President Trump described the moment confusion broke out, initially mistaking the sound for a falling object before realizing the severity of the situation.
Security personnel quickly escorted him and the First Lady from the ballroom as agents secured the area and evacuated remaining dignitaries. Trump later praised the Secret Service response, stating they acted “swiftly and professionally” under pressure.
Despite initial intentions to continue the event, Trump said the Secret Service advised against resuming the dinner due to security concerns.
Guests Forced Into Panic Response
Inside the ballroom, chaos unfolded as agents moved between tables, climbing over chairs and guiding high-value individuals to safety. Some security personnel reportedly formed human shields around cabinet officials, while others cleared exit routes through crowded corridors.
As the situation stabilized, guests began to process the unfolding events, many using mobile phones to document the aftermath. Reports indicated that communication networks inside the venue were overwhelmed, leaving attendees scrambling for information.
Chants of “USA! USA!” were heard intermittently among portions of the crowd as security operations continued.
Event Cancelled, Investigation Ongoing
The dinner was officially cancelled, and guests were instructed to leave the premises after the ballroom was sealed and secured for investigation. Authorities confirmed that the injured Secret Service agent was taken for medical treatment and later released.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have launched a full-scale investigation into how the armed suspect managed to breach internal hotel security layers during one of Washington’s most heavily protected annual events.
Heightened Concerns Over Political Security
The incident has renewed debate over the effectiveness of protective measures for U.S. political leaders, particularly in light of previous assassination attempts targeting President Trump during the 2024 campaign cycle.
Security analysts are now expected to review access control protocols, coordination between federal and private security teams, and screening procedures at high-profile venues hosting government officials.
