KARACHI, August 23, 2026: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi staged the comedy theatre play “Bhaley” on the third day of the ongoing Sindhi Theatre Festival 2026, drawing a strong response from theatre enthusiasts and cultural figures.
The performance formed part of the Arts Council’s efforts to promote Sindhi theatre and preserve the region’s cultural heritage. President Arts Council Muhammad Ahmed Shah attended the event along with a large audience. Theatre lovers applauded the cast for their engaging performances.
Written by Sohrab Soomro and directed by Ali Gul Mallah, “Bhaley” featured Ali Gul Mallah, Amjad Gul, Laiba, Abdullah Mallah and Sher Dil in prominent roles.
Sindhi theatre reflects cultural identity
Speaking at the event, Muhammad Ahmed Shah said Sindhi and Urdu theatre remain important parts of Pakistan’s cultural identity. He stressed the need to provide equal opportunities to both forms of theatre and promote them through cultural institutions.
According to Shah, Sindhi theatre reflects the traditions, culture and social life of the region. He said institutions have a responsibility to preserve this heritage and introduce it to younger generations.
He also highlighted the role of Urdu theatre in presenting social issues, human emotions and cultural values. The Arts Council, he said, aims not only to stage productions but also to give emerging artists opportunities to develop their skills.

“Bhaley” explores stubbornness and family choices
The comedy revolves around a retired officer whose stubborn personality leads him to oppose almost every suggestion made by others. People around him soon learn to use his behaviour to their advantage.
When someone tells the officer something directly, he often reacts in the opposite way. However, he takes contradictory statements literally, creating a series of humorous situations.
The story takes another turn when the retired officer decides that his daughter should marry a servant. Despite the servant initially refusing the proposal, the officer remains determined to impose his decision.
Eventually, the daughter marries a college fellow of her own choice. The development forces the retired officer to confront the consequences of his stubborn attitude.
The play delivers a broader message about family relationships and parental responsibility. It encourages parents to respect their children’s choices, happiness and future instead of imposing decisions on them.
The enthusiastic response to “Bhaley” reflected the continued interest in Sindhi theatre and its ability to combine entertainment with meaningful social messages.
