A sleeper bus coming from Lahore to Karachi on Motorway M-5 caught fire after a collision with a tanker. At least 20 people were killed and 6 injured in the accident.
Motorway M5 was closed for several hours at the site of the accident. According to the highway authorities, a Daewoo sleeper bus collided with an oil tanker while speeding on Multan Sukkur Motorway.
According to the spokesperson of the Motorway Police, the oil tanker and the bus caught fire as a result of the collision.
Motorway police officers rushed to the spot as soon as the accident was reported, local police and rescue 1122 teams were also present at the spot.
According to the spokesman, the fire was so intense and terrifying that it was visible from a distance, most of the people were pulled out alive from the two burning vehicles and they were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals.
The spokesman has said that it took several hours for the rescue teams to put out the fire, on the instructions of IG Khalid Mehmood, the Motorway Police has set up an emergency crisis center. DIG Shahid Jawad was present at the spot during the emergency operation.
Motorway police had safely pulled out 9 passengers from the burning bus, the police took the bodies and the injured to a nearby hospital.
According to reports from Lahore, the bus that was involved in the accident was a 2009 model operated by Daewoo Company. The sleeper bus had left Lahore for Karachi at 9 pm.
According to the company sources, there were 2 drivers in the bus, all the staff had to change in Sukkur, total 24 passengers were in the bus, out of which 2 passengers were to get down to Hyderabad while 22 passengers were to go to Karachi.
