Shehbaz Sharif expected to meet Vladimir Putin during a proposed official visit to Russia starting November 30.

Shehbaz Sharif: Pakistan’s prime minister is expected to visit Russia for talks on bilateral cooperation and trade.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to undertake a four-day official visit to Russia from November 30. During the proposed visit, he is likely to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation across key sectors.

According to diplomatic sources, the talks are expected to cover political and diplomatic ties, trade, economic cooperation, energy and regional developments. Both countries are also likely to discuss international issues of mutual interest.

Trade and Energy Cooperation on the Agenda

Expanding bilateral trade and strengthening economic ties are expected to feature prominently in the discussions. The two sides may explore cooperation in oil and gas supplies, investment, industrial development and joint economic projects.

Russian support for the rehabilitation and modernisation of Pakistan Steel Mills may also come under discussion. Other potential areas include energy infrastructure, agriculture and food security.

The countries are also expected to examine ways to facilitate banking transactions and trade payments. Improving financial mechanisms could help businesses address existing challenges and expand commercial engagement.

Pakistan-Russia Business Forum Planned

A Pakistan-Russia Business Forum is expected to take place alongside the prime minister’s visit. Around 100 Pakistani business leaders and company representatives may participate.

The forum is expected to facilitate business-to-business meetings between Pakistani and Russian companies. Participants could explore commercial partnerships, joint investments and opportunities to increase bilateral trade.

The Pakistani delegation is likely to include representatives from textiles, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals, industrial products and energy.

Diplomatic sources said a business forum and a sizeable Pakistani business delegation had also been considered for an earlier planned visit. That visit was subsequently postponed, and key elements of its proposed programme may feature in the new schedule.

Regional Security and International Issues

The proposed talks may also address regional and international developments. These include the situation in Afghanistan and security concerns across South and Central Asia.

Cooperation at international forums is another potential topic. The discussions are expected to provide an opportunity for both countries to exchange views on issues affecting regional stability and their shared interests.

Meeting with Pakistani Students Also Expected

During the visit, Shehbaz Sharif is likely to meet Pakistani students studying in Russia. The meeting could provide an opportunity to discuss their educational experiences, concerns and prospects for stronger academic cooperation.

Officials are also considering a one-day visit to St Petersburg, Russia’s historic cultural city, as part of the programme.

Pakistan-Russia Ties in Focus

Pakistan and Russia have increased high-level diplomatic engagement and explored broader economic cooperation in recent years. Both countries have expressed interest in strengthening ties in trade, energy, industrial development, education and regional connectivity.

The proposed visit could create further opportunities for economic engagement and bilateral cooperation. However, the final dates, delegation details and schedule of meetings have yet to be officially announced.

Until the two governments confirm the programme, the proposed meetings and activities remain subject to final arrangements.
