SSGC Launches Advanced Mobile Gas Leak Detection System for Safer Communities

SSGC MD Amin Rajput launches advanced mobile gas leak detection system in Karachi

SSGC Managing Director Amin Rajput launches the Advanced Mobile Gas Leak Detection System in Karachi.

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has launched an Advanced Mobile Gas Leak Detection System (AMGLDS) to improve public safety, reduce gas losses and strengthen environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance.

SSGC described itself as Pakistan’s first gas utility company to deploy the advanced mobile system across its distribution network.

The formal launch and handover ceremony took place at the company’s Learning and Development Centre at its Karachi Terminal facility. SSGC Managing Director Amin Rajput attended the ceremony as chief guest.

Senior management, executives and business partners also participated in the event. Rajput formally launched the system through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, the SSGC managing director called the deployment a landmark achievement for the company and Pakistan’s energy sector.

He said the technology marks a new phase in safety, environmental responsibility and digital excellence. It will help field teams detect even minute gas leaks and address them before they become public hazards.

Rajput added that the investment reflects SSGC’s commitment to protecting communities, improving field resources and modernizing its infrastructure.

The system will also help the company conserve natural gas by identifying leaks at an early stage. Moreover, SSGC aims to shift from traditional reactive maintenance toward a proactive asset integrity model.

Rajput also highlighted the company’s efforts to reduce methane emissions and strengthen ESG compliance. He said responsible energy delivery must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility.

He congratulated the management, research and development (R&D), and operations teams for successfully implementing the project.

Meanwhile, SSGC Deputy Managing Director-Operations Saeed Rizvi described the AMGLDS deployment as a major technological upgrade for field operations.

According to Rizvi, the system will transform how SSGC teams inspect, detect, diagnose, rectify and maintain the gas distribution network.

Each unit uses ABB technology and can detect gas concentrations at parts-per-billion (PPB) levels. The system also uses advanced algorithms to identify leak locations and estimate leak flow rates.

This capability will allow SSGC teams to prioritize leak repairs according to leak volume and severity. As a result, the company can target critical leaks more efficiently and improve network safety.

Rizvi also acknowledged the project team and various departments for their efforts and support during the implementation process.

Project Lead and Head of R&D Muhammad Ali Shah presented the project journey, from its initial concept to implementation. He also explained key system features and the customizations developed for local operating conditions.

SSGC’s senior management recognized employees and partners who contributed to the project. The company presented commemorative shields to field engineers, project team members, the project lead and the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner.

Furthermore, SSGC formally transferred custodianship of the AMGLD units from the R&D Project Department to the general managers of the Distribution Division.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Adil Aziz Khan, Divisional Head of R&D. He expressed gratitude to senior management, project teams, regional operations and technical teams, support departments, technology partners and the event management committee.

The deployment marks another step in SSGC’s efforts to use technology for safer gas distribution, lower gas losses and stronger environmental performance.
