Eurovision 2027: Netherlands Pulls Out Over Concerns About Gaza Conflict

AMSTERDAM: The Netherlands will not participate in the Eurovision 2027 Song Contest, with Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS citing concerns over the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on the event’s neutrality.
AVROTROS said the contest could no longer be considered politically neutral while a participating country remained involved in a large-scale military conflict.
The broadcaster said it had spent the past year urging the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises Eurovision, to introduce clear and transparent rules for countries involved in military conflicts.
However, AVROTROS said recently announced changes by the EBU had failed to provide sufficient confidence that Eurovision’s independent and neutral character had been restored.
Netherlands Raises Neutrality Concerns
AVROTROS said its decision reflects its values of trustworthiness, independence and humanity.
The broadcaster also pointed to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and concerns over restrictions on press freedom. It said these issues had contributed to growing divisions surrounding the Eurovision Song Contest.
According to AVROTROS, five countries withdrew from the 2026 contest. It also noted that former Eurovision winners had returned their trophies, while more than 1,000 musicians and cultural professionals signed an open letter calling on the EBU to take action over Israel’s participation.
The Dutch broadcaster said these developments showed the need for a clear framework defining when a country involved in a military conflict can participate in a competition that aims to remain politically neutral.

Eurovision Faces Growing Political Pressure
AVROTROS director-general Taco Zimmerman said Eurovision was originally created to bring countries and people together.
He argued that international conflicts were increasingly influencing the contest and weakening its neutral character.
According to Zimmerman, Eurovision had consequently become a platform for division rather than unity.
The Netherlands’ withdrawal adds to growing debate over the EBU’s approach to political and military conflicts involving participating countries.
Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Remains Central to Debate
AVROTROS also cited the humanitarian situation in Gaza as a factor behind its decision.
According to the information provided by Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israel continues to restrict the entry of agreed quantities of food, medicine, medical supplies, shelter materials and prefabricated homes into the territory.
The ministry said Gaza’s population of around 2.4 million people, including about 2.15 million displaced residents, continues to face severe humanitarian conditions.
It also reported that ongoing Israeli violations of the ceasefire had killed 1,286 Palestinians and injured 4,257 others as of Sunday.
The ministry said the overall Palestinian death toll from Israel’s war in Gaza since October 2023 had reached 73,420, while 174,369 people had been injured.
The Netherlands’ decision is likely to add further pressure on Eurovision organisers as the EBU seeks to balance the contest’s entertainment role with concerns surrounding international conflicts and political neutrality.
