‘Mera Safar’ Launch at Arts Council Karachi Celebrates Qazi Faiz Muhammad’s Democratic Legacy

KARACHI — The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi hosted the launch ceremony of Mera Safar, the autobiography of eminent social, political and literary figure Qazi Faiz Muhammad, bringing together leading journalists, politicians, academics and cultural personalities to celebrate his lifelong contribution to democracy, social justice and public service.
The event was chaired by senior journalist, columnist and human rights advocate Hussain Naqi. Among the distinguished guests were former Balochistan Chief Minister Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch, Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi President Muhammad Ahmed Shah, senior advocate Akhtar Hussain, journalist Mazhar Abbas, educationist Akbar Zaidi, scholar Dr. Imdad Chandio and several prominent figures from Pakistan’s literary, political and cultural communities.
The ceremony, moderated by scholar Dr. Jaffar Ahmed, opened with a soulful performance of a Waee by the great Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, presented by Faqeer Nizam Ali, Faqeer Ismail, Faqeer Ali Murtaza and Faqeer Iman Ali.

Book Described as an Important Historical Record
In his keynote address, Hussain Naqi said Mera Safar is much more than an autobiography, describing it as an important historical account of Pakistan’s democratic and political journey.
He praised Qazi Faiz Muhammad for dedicating his life to principled politics, democratic values and the rights of ordinary citizens. Naqi said understanding Sindh’s political history is impossible without recognising Qazi Faiz Muhammad’s lifelong struggle.
He also commended Dr. Jaffar Ahmed and his team for their scholarly work in compiling and translating the book.
Speakers Highlight Lifelong Commitment to Democracy
Former Balochistan Chief Minister Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch said Qazi Faiz Muhammad remained committed to his political principles throughout his life and consistently advocated for peasants and working-class communities through the Sindh Hari Committee.
He noted that progressive and nationalist movements in Pakistan have received limited documentation and described the autobiography as an inspiring resource for younger generations. Referring to the situation in Balochistan, he stressed that political dialogue, rather than force, remains the only sustainable solution to the province’s challenges.
Senior journalist Mazhar Abbas described Qazi Faiz Muhammad as one of the most influential figures in Sindh’s progressive political movement. He said the veteran politician remained deeply connected to Sindh’s history, culture and public concerns throughout his life.
Senior advocate Akhtar Hussain portrayed Qazi Faiz Muhammad as a multifaceted personality whose contributions extended beyond politics to law, literature and music. He said his lifelong struggle against feudalism and his advocacy for workers and farmers strengthened democratic institutions in Pakistan.
A Legacy for Future Generations
Educationist and researcher Akbar Zaidi said the autobiography represents an important chapter in South Asia’s history of democratic politics and social consciousness.
He described Mera Safar as a political, social and intellectual chronicle that offers valuable insights into a defining era of Pakistan’s history and should be widely read by younger generations.
Dr. Imdad Chandio said Qazi Faiz Muhammad holds a distinguished place in Sindh’s political and intellectual landscape because of his unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of peasants, workers and marginalised communities.
He added that the autobiography will serve as an important historical document for future generations seeking to understand Pakistan’s political evolution.
Cultural Performance Brings Ceremony to a Close
The event concluded with a captivating performance by renowned Thar folk singer Mai Dhai, whose traditional folk and Sufi melodies celebrated Sindh’s rich cultural heritage.
Her performance received a standing ovation from the audience, bringing the literary gathering to a memorable conclusion.
