UN Secretary-General candidate H.E. Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to discuss multilateral cooperation, global governance and Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to the United Nations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed María Fernanda Espinosa and reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace, security and sustainable development.
During the meeting, the prime minister stressed the importance of upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, ensuring the effective implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, respecting international law and strengthening international cooperation among member states.
Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that the next Secretary-General of the United Nations would continue to reinforce the organisation’s three core pillars—peace and security, sustainable development and human rights—while promoting dialogue, cooperation and collective action to address global challenges.
María Fernanda Espinosa thanked the prime minister for the warm welcome and appreciated Pakistan’s active role in promoting regional peace and its long-standing contributions to the United Nations. She also acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive engagement in multilateral diplomacy over the years.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming the importance of international cooperation, effective multilateral institutions and continued collaboration to promote global peace, security and sustainable development.
