KARACHI: Pakistan has achieved a significant academic milestone with the emergence of its first female Ph.D. scholar in the field of Blue Economy. Ms. Urooj Aijaz, a faculty member at Bahria University Karachi, successfully completed her doctoral research focusing on Pakistan’s blue economy potential and sustainable maritime development.
She earned her Ph.D. degree from Jinnah University for Women with a research thesis titled “Blue Economy of Pakistan: Investigating the Impact of Tourism, Environment and Technology on Blue Growth.”
Her research explored the opportunities and challenges associated with Pakistan’s blue economy, particularly examining how tourism, environmental sustainability, and technological advancement can contribute to long-term blue growth and economic development.
The study also highlighted the importance of “Blue Education” as a critical component for promoting awareness, innovation, research, and sustainable utilization of marine and coastal resources in Pakistan.
Academic circles have described the achievement as an important step toward strengthening research in marine economics, coastal development, and sustainable resource management in the country.
Experts believe that Pakistan’s vast coastline and maritime resources offer immense opportunities for economic growth through fisheries, tourism, shipping, renewable energy, and marine technology, making specialized research in Blue Economy increasingly important for national development.
Ms. Urooj Aijaz’s achievement is being viewed as an encouraging development for women’s participation in advanced research and emerging economic sectors in Pakistan.
