According to Rescue 1122 officials, the tragic drowning incident occurred when 8-year-old Sameer and his 6-year-old sister Fatima, who had come from Balakot to visit their grandparents in Tarapi, slipped from a rocky slope while playing near the riverbank.
District Emergency Officer Rescue 1122 Ibrar Ali said a search and rescue operation was immediately launched after receiving information about the incident. “The children fell into the river from a height and were swept away by the strong current,” he said.
Eyewitnesses stated that family members and villagers rushed to the site after the incident and informed rescue authorities. Officials added that the swift flow of water has made recovery efforts difficult.
“Our divers are actively searching, but the strong current is hampering the operation. We remain hopeful the bodies will be recovered soon,” Ibrar Ali said, urging the public to avoid crowding the rescue site.
In a separate incident, violence erupted in the Nawazabad area of Siren Valley over a long-standing land dispute, resulting in one death and critical injuries to another individual.
Police said rival groups exchanged gunfire, leaving Waliur Rehman and Mohammad Alam injured. Rehman succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a nearby hospital, while Alam remains under treatment.
The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after completion of medico-legal formalities. Authorities confirmed that an FIR has been registered and investigations are underway, though the accused have fled the scene.
