Experts say that stem cell therapy for babies in the womb can eliminate brain problems related to birth defects. The problem of spina bifida occurs when the baby’s spine does not fully form in the womb. The condition is diagnosed during pregnancy or shortly after birth. In the study, surgeons implanted stem cells into the spinal cord during fetal surgery. Researchers are now hopeful that the procedure could have lifelong effects on the health of people with the condition. There are two main types of spina bifida, open spina bifida and closed spina bifida. Open spina bifida, also known as myelomeningocele and meningocele, is relatively rare but more serious. It causes the spinal cord to protrude through a gap in the spinal canal.
