Sindh Enacts Tough Traffic Laws: CNIC Blocking, License Cancellation for Repeat Offenders

KARACHI – In a bid to improve road safety and crack down on traffic violations, the Sindh government has rolled out strict new traffic laws, especially targeting habitual violators in Karachi.

The new regulations, officially approved by the Sindh cabinet, include harsh penalties such as cancellation of driving licenses and blocking of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) for repeat offenders. Fines have also been significantly increased — now ranging from Rs5,000 to as high as Rs250,000 depending on the severity of the offense.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, confirmed the changes and announced the establishment of dedicated traffic courts in Karachi. These courts will offer a legal platform for citizens to challenge fines.

Outlining the consequences of non-compliance, IGP Memon stated:

  • If a traffic fine is not paid within 21 days, the amount will double.
  • After 90 days, the violator’s driving license will be revoked.
  • If the fine remains unpaid for 180 days, the individual’s CNIC will be blocked.

Additionally, violations that endanger lives could lead to penalties up to ten times higher than standard fines.

The move is part of Sindh’s broader push to digitize traffic management, aiming to enhance transparency, accountability, and enforcement across the province.
