Punjab Bans Drone Use During Muharram Processions Amid Security Concerns

The Punjab government has officially banned the use of drones during Muharram processions and gatherings due to heightened security concerns. This restriction includes all forms of drone activity, even for media coverage.

At a press conference on Thursday, Provincial Information Minister Uzma Bukhari stated that the decision was made to ensure public safety, adding that any suspension of mobile services or ban on motorcycle pillion riding will depend on the evolving situation.

To maintain security, Rangers and army personnel have been deployed across the province. Security agencies have already taken action against multiple sleeper cells, while other threats are under continuous observation.

According to Bukhari, over 38,000 gatherings and more than 9,000 processions are expected in Punjab. For their security, over 238,000 police officers and 35,000 volunteers will be on duty, supported by special units like the Dolphin Force and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

She emphasized that a strict code of conduct has been issued, and a dedicated cyber security team will monitor social media to counter hate speech. The ban on drone usage remains absolute throughout Muharram.
