KARACHI: The city of Karachi has experienced a significant rise in crime, with more than 26,500 incidents reported between January and May 2025, according to figures released by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), ARY News reported.

The report reveals that 245 people lost their lives in various incidents, including 48 individuals who were shot and killed while resisting robberies.

Motorcycle-related crimes topped the list, with over 17,994 cases of snatching and theft. Additionally, there were more than 684 incidents involving stolen or snatched cars and other vehicles. Mobile phone snatching also remained a major concern, with 6,489 cases reported.

Organized crime continues to trouble the city, with 11 reported cases of kidnapping for ransom and 32 cases of extortion during the same period.

In one such incident, Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sector 5-D Bilal Colony in Karachi’s Central District, was kidnapped on October 5. The abductors demanded Rs. 1 million in ransom. His family reported the incident to local police, and the case was handed over to the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) in collaboration with the CPLC.

A specialized team launched an investigation using surveillance and technical tools, eventually locating the hideout. While Nasir Hussain was successfully rescued, the kidnappers managed to escape.
