In a notable example of cross-party policy continuity, the federal government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has opted to carry forward a major environmental initiative launched during the PTI administration. The Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Project will now proceed under the new title “Upscaling of Green Pakistan Program” in the 2025–26 fiscal year.

As per the official budget documents, Rs 2.25 billion has been proposed for the program in the upcoming year, demonstrating the government’s sustained commitment to combating climate change and restoring forest ecosystems.

Initially greenlit by ECNEC in August 2019 under PTI, the project focuses on large-scale tree plantation to counter deforestation and reduce the effects of climate change. While the name has been updated, the project’s core aims and environmental goals remain intact.

By June 2025, total spending on the initiative is projected to hit Rs 32.81 billion, out of a planned Rs 81.83 billion. In the current fiscal year, the government allocated Rs 5 billion for its implementation.

The decision to maintain and fund this program highlights a growing bipartisan recognition of the climate crisis and the importance of long-term ecological initiatives, regardless of political affiliations.
