ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has directed K-Electric (KE) to immediately implement measures to enhance its operations and end the ongoing power outages in Karachi, according to ARY News.

Residents in Karachi have faced up to 12 hours of load-shedding daily in May 2025, amid intense heat and rising health concerns. Responding to widespread complaints, NEPRA has instructed KE to boost operational efficiency and cut down power disruptions, which are severely impacting both daily life and business activities in Pakistan’s largest and most industrially vital city.

NEPRA has also ordered KE to improve its electricity recovery standards and reduce system losses to ensure uninterrupted supply. The authority has penalized KE and other companies for unjustified power outages, criticizing KE’s growing reliance on the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) while producing expensive electricity from its own sources.

Highlighting the burden on consumers, NEPRA warned KE against overcharging and mismanagement and demanded a detailed report within seven days outlining the steps taken to reduce outages.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Awais Ahmad Leghari announced that the government is preparing a review petition regarding NEPRA’s recent decision on KE’s tariff. Leghari emphasized the need to protect consumers and ensure a fair electricity pricing structure, expressing hope that NEPRA would act in the best interest of the public and the country.
