The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked over 844,000 websites for spreading explicit content, alongside efforts to block unregistered Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that pose security risks.

On Thursday, Pakistan Observer reported that PTA has so far blocked 844,008 websites containing profane and obscene content. In a separate development, the federal government has initiated a firewall trial to block unregistered VPNs.

According to the report, unregistered VPNs are being temporarily blocked for white-listing. Sources within the Telecommunication Authority described unregistered VPNs as a ‘security risk’ for the country, as they could be used to access ‘sensitive information.’

Meanwhile, PTA urges businesses, including IT companies, software houses, freelancers, and banks, to register their IP addresses to ensure continued VPN access and uninterrupted internet services, thereby establishing them as authorized users.

To register IP addresses for continued VPN access, companies and individuals must provide information on their intended use and specify their business activities.

Concerns about privacy among individuals and companies remain high. The report notes that PTA began VPN registration in 2010, and to date, around 20,500 VPNs have been registered, according to sources.
