Islamabad, May 20, 2025 – Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, has been promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, the highest military rank, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday. This is the first such elevation in nearly six decades, marking a rare and historic moment in Pakistan’s military history.
The promotion was approved by the federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, just days after Pakistan experienced its most intense military confrontation with India in nearly 30 years.
What Is a Field Marshal?
A field marshal is the highest rank in many armed forces, usually positioned above all general officer ranks. In NATO terms, it is classified as a five-star rank (OF-10) and is rarely awarded, typically reserved for individuals who have shown exceptional leadership during wartime or contributed significantly to national defense.
Historically, the title has been conferred in countries such as Pakistan, India, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan as a symbol of extraordinary military success and national honor.
While the rank is largely ceremonial in modern contexts, in some nations like France, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, and Mexico, it has at times served a functional role at divisional or brigade command levels.
Despite these variations, the designation of Field Marshal remains one of the most prestigious honors in military tradition, often reflecting unmatched service and strategic command.
