UN officials and Roma Mushtaq Matto visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi.

KARACHI: A United Nations delegation visited the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi, where officials discussed minority welfare, interfaith harmony and social inclusion with church representatives and Sindh Assembly member Roma Mushtaq Matto.

The delegation was led by Mohamed Yahya, UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan. Afke Bootsman, Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Pakistan, and Imran Khan Laghari, Provincial Coordinator of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Sindh, also attended the visit.

Roma Mushtaq Matto Welcomes UN Delegation

At the invitation of the church administration, Roma Mushtaq Matto, Member of the Sindh Provincial Assembly and Parliamentary Secretary for Minorities Affairs, joined the delegation.

Church Fathers and the administration warmly welcomed the visiting officials and Matto. They briefed the guests on the cathedral’s historical and religious importance.

The briefing also covered the church’s services to the Christian community. Welfare programmes and social initiatives were discussed during the visit.

Matto stressed the importance of cooperation to promote religious harmony and respect among different faiths. She said dialogue and tolerance can help strengthen peace across society.

Focus on Minority Welfare and Inclusion

The parliamentary secretary praised the UN for its humanitarian and development work in Pakistan. She highlighted its efforts in disaster response, climate-related challenges and support for vulnerable communities.

Matto also said the Pakistan Peoples Party supports tolerance, equality, human rights and minority protection.

She said the Sindh government was taking practical steps to support minorities and other communities. The aim, she added, is to provide equal opportunities across society.

Matto further called for stronger cooperation between the Sindh government, the UN, religious institutions and civil society.

She said such partnerships could support public welfare, social inclusion and sustainable development. She added that all religious communities are equal partners in Pakistan’s progress.

UN Calls for Greater Cooperation

Mohamed Yahya thanked the church administration and Roma Mushtaq Matto for their hospitality. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts to strengthen religious harmony and social inclusion.

The participants also exchanged views on minority welfare and human development. Community-level cooperation and interfaith dialogue were among the key issues discussed.

The visit ended in a cordial atmosphere. Participants expressed a shared commitment to promoting peace, tolerance, mutual respect and cooperation among Pakistan’s diverse religious communities.
