SAUDIA : Saudi Arabia has announced a plan to issue passports to millions of camels in the country, with the aim of better managing the kingdom’s valuable camel herds. According to AFP, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture says that this initiative will increase productivity and efficiency in the sector and create a reliable database on camels. A post released by the ministry on social media on Tuesday included a picture of the passport, which is green in color and features the Saudi national emblem and a golden camel. According to 2024 data, the number of camels in the kingdom is approximately 2.2 million. Camels have been an important means of transportation in the Arab world for centuries, while the animals are also considered a symbol of prestige and social status for their owners. This tradition has given rise to a profitable breeding industry. Camel beauty contests are also held during the annual festivals held in Saudi Arabia, where enthusiasts spend millions of dollars on their camels. However, some unscrupulous individuals also try to gain an advantage through illegal means.
