KARACHI: Pasban Democratic Party PDP Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Saturday expressing serious reservations on the method in which election of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) were held has demanded reelections to ensure transparency and fair play.
In a statement here, he said the PEC, which is the body of professional engineers, failed to hold their elections online and became dependent on the Nadra. Sadly, the link of Nadra was down for four hours on the election day and the majority of the voters returned back without casting their vote after standing in queues for hours.
He said it seems a conspiracy that the Nadra link was only down for the PEC elections while other work of Nadra was running normally as per schedule.
He said it seems that a powerful lobby wants to keep the PEC out of the reach of common engineers, as the PEC has a huge budget and a certain corrupt mafia wants to misuse it.
He said overall just 10 percent vote was cast, and in Karachi it was just five percent. He said out of 368000 voters only 31568 votes were cast.
He asked the elected persons not to take oath of their offices as they don’t enjoy the real mandate. He demanded reelection of the PEC to uphold transparency and fair play.
Altaf Shakoor, himself is an NED graduate of 1982 and remained as president of the NED University student union.
