ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has declared Wednesday, May 28, 2025, a public holiday in observance of Youm-e-Takbeer, commemorating the day Pakistan emerged as a nuclear power.
Youm-e-Takbeer symbolizes the nation’s unwavering resolve to protect its sovereignty and national security. On this day in 1998, Pakistan successfully conducted nuclear tests in Chaghai, Balochistan, becoming the seventh nuclear-armed country globally and the first among Muslim nations. These tests were carried out in response to India’s nuclear detonations earlier that month at Pokhran, Rajasthan.
In December 2024, the federal government officially included May 28 in the list of public holidays for 2025.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) also announced a holiday on May 28, confirming closure in line with the government’s declaration. A statement from PSX noted, “All concerned are hereby informed that Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited will remain closed on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, being public holiday declared by the Government of Pakistan on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer.”
The observance marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s defense history and is a day of national pride and reflection.
