Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) and the Sindh Police’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) have conducted a joint operation against an alleged extortion gang in Jamshed Town, Karachi.

According to a Rangers press release, an exchange of fire during the operation left one suspected gang member dead and two alleged extortionists injured. Police and Rangers arrested the injured suspects.

The deceased suspect was identified as Zohan alias Sanwal. The arrested men were identified as Hassan alias Murghi Wala and Hussain alias Moni. Security personnel also recovered weapons and ammunition from the suspects.

Rangers described the operation as their third major joint action with the SIU against extortion networks since October 24, 2026.

Suspects Linked to Two Karachi Shooting Incidents

The press release linked the suspects to two shooting incidents allegedly involving members of the Samad Kathiawari group.

On October 2, 2026, unidentified members of the group allegedly opened fire at Memon Mall shopping plaza in Malir. The shooting killed security guard Ali Raza and injured another guard.

Police registered a case at the Malir City Police Station.

In a separate incident on October 28, the group allegedly targeted a building under construction by Jumani Builders on Nishtar Road in Garden. The firing killed one labourer and injured two others.

Police registered the second case at the Soldier Bazaar Police Station.

Following these incidents, law enforcement agencies formed a joint investigation team. The team examined the crime scenes, reviewed CCTV footage and used intelligence sources to identify the suspected individuals, according to Rangers.

Investigators subsequently received information about the suspects’ presence in Jamshed Town, near Bagh-e-Jinnah. The joint team raided the location, where the suspects allegedly opened fire.

Security personnel returned fire, killing Zohan alias Sanwal and arresting two injured suspects.

Arrested Suspects Make Alleged Confessions

According to the Rangers statement, the two arrested suspects disclosed during interrogation that they had carried out the October 2 attack at Memon Mall with Zohan alias Sanwal.

They allegedly said they acted on the instructions of Samad Kathiawari because the business had refused to pay extortion money. The attack resulted in the death of one security guard and injuries to another.

Rangers also said CCTV footage clearly showed the suspects at the scene.

The arrested men further claimed that Samad Kathiawari arranged for an unidentified associate to provide them with a 9mm pistol and 50 rounds in the Hussainabad area on September 15. They allegedly received the weapon for carrying out shooting attacks.

The suspects also reportedly shared information with Kathiawari about buildings under construction and businesses in different parts of Karachi. The group allegedly intended to target these properties and businesses for extortion.

According to the statement, the suspects were planning further firing incidents at buildings and other locations to spread fear if business owners refused to pay.

Raids Underway to Arrest Other Suspects

Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) said authorities were conducting further raids to arrest the group’s remaining members.

The force appealed to the public to report information about extortion activities to the nearest Rangers checkpoint, its helpline or its WhatsApp assistance number.

Citizens can contact Rangers at 1101 or send a call or SMS to 0347-9001111. The force said it would keep informants’ identities confidential.

The statement was issued by the spokesperson for Pakistan Rangers (Sindh).
