Mangrove Plantation Drive Targets Karachi’s Coastline as Communities Join Conservation Effort
Mera Karachi Group brings volunteers, students and environmental groups together to expand mangrove cover and protect the city’s fragile coastal ecosystem.
KARACHI, August 27, 2026: A community-led mangrove plantation drive has taken place at Toor Creek in the Indus Delta as environmental groups and local residents joined efforts to protect Karachi’s vulnerable coastline.
Mera Karachi Group (MKG), a civil society initiative focused on a cleaner and more sustainable city, organised the plantation activity with support from the Sindh Forest Department, Caritas Pakistan and Ecolife.
More than 60 people participated in the campaign. The participants included volunteers, environmental advocates and students from Rehri Goth, a fishing village located along Karachi’s coastal belt.
Protecting Karachi’s Coastal Ecosystem
The campaign aimed to increase mangrove cover while raising awareness about the importance of coastal conservation.
Mangroves play an important role in protecting coastal areas and supporting marine ecosystems. For communities living along Karachi’s coastline, their preservation also has wider environmental and economic significance.

MKG said involving local residents was an important part of the initiative. The group particularly focused on young people, encouraging them to understand the importance of protecting the natural environment around their communities.

Students and volunteers from Rehri Goth participated in the plantation activity, bringing the conservation campaign closer to communities that depend on the coastal environment.
The participation highlighted the role local communities can play in protecting Karachi’s coastline.
MKG said environmental protection should not remain the responsibility of government institutions alone. Civil society organisations, communities and educational institutions all have an important role in long-term conservation efforts.
Call for Wider Environmental Participation
The group also emphasised the importance of corporate-sector involvement in environmental initiatives.
According to MKG, sustained cooperation between government agencies, civil society, schools and universities, local communities and businesses can help build a stronger environmental protection framework for Karachi.
The Toor Creek plantation drive forms part of wider efforts to improve awareness about Karachi’s coastal environment and encourage greater public participation in conservation.
MKG said continued community involvement will be essential to creating a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Karachi.
