Argentina captain Lionel Messi is expected to start in Tuesday’s home international friendly against Zambia, head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed on Monday.

Messi made a substitute appearance in Argentina’s 2-1 win over Mauritania on Friday, coming on at halftime in a match that proved more competitive than expected.

“Yes, I think he’ll start from the beginning tomorrow,” Scaloni said, adding that the performance against Mauritania served as “an alert” for the squad despite the victory.

The back-to-back friendlies are part of Argentina’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where the defending champions aim to finalise their 26-man squad.

Scaloni indicated that the selection process is nearing completion. “We have to start discarding options now based on performance. There is no other option,” he said.

While Messi has yet to confirm his participation in the tournament, Scaloni expressed optimism that the 36-year-old will be part of the squad. “The important thing is that he comes and enjoys it. It may well be his last World Cup, but what matters is that he enjoys being there,” he added.

Argentina will open their World Cup campaign on June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City, followed by fixtures against Austria and Jordan. The South American side is aiming to secure a fourth World Cup title.
