LAHORE: A roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area killed 14 children on Tuesday, triggering grief across Pakistan and renewed calls for accountability over building safety and negligence.

Authorities said around 20 people became trapped after the roof of the tuition centre collapsed while classes were in session. Rescue teams pulled victims from the rubble and transferred several injured children to hospitals, where some remained in critical condition.

Officials said the tuition centre operated inside a residential house where construction work was underway at the time of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the ongoing work may have contributed to the collapse.

The deaths sparked widespread reaction on social media, where users expressed condolences to the affected families and demanded action against those responsible.

Many questioned how a building undergoing construction continued to host classes, while others raised broader concerns about child safety and educational pressures.

Some users also questioned why very young children — including a reported victim aged five — attended tuition classes outside regular school hours, arguing that the incident reflected deeper challenges within the education system.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Lahore Police confirmed rescue operations had concluded and announced that two individuals had been taken into custody as part of the initial investigation.

Police identified those detained as the house owner and the contractor involved in construction work at the property. Lahore Deputy Inspector General Operations Faisal Kamran confirmed both arrests and said investigations were continuing.

Building and roof collapses remain a recurring concern in Pakistan. A separate incident in Muzaffargarh on Monday killed two young sisters and injured another child. Earlier this month, three members of a family died after the roof of an under-construction room collapsed in Faisalabad’s Jaranwala area.

The Lahore tragedy has renewed demands for stricter enforcement of construction regulations and stronger safeguards for children in educational settings.
