Lahore Named SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital for 2026-27

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) has named Lahore its Tourism and Cultural Capital for 2026-27.

The announcement came during the 26th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the meeting.

The recognition puts Lahore in the international spotlight. It also gives Pakistan a new opportunity to promote its history, culture and tourism.

SCO Selects Lahore for 2026-27

The SCO rotates the Tourism and Cultural Capital title among its member states each year.

The initiative began in 2022. It highlights cities that represent the cultural identity and heritage of SCO member countries.

The Lahore Tourism programme is expected to encourage international visitors and strengthen cultural links between SCO nations.

Pakistan currently holds the rotating presidency of the SCO.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has chosen the theme, “Turning Vision into Action: Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity,” for Pakistan’s chairmanship.

The SCO tourism designation could support this wider agenda by increasing cultural exchanges and people-to-people contact.

Decision Taken at Bishkek Meeting

SCO tourism officials agreed on Lahore’s selection during a meeting in Bishkek in April.

The organisation later announced the decision at the SCO Council of Heads of State meeting.

The title aims to promote tourism and encourage cultural cooperation across member states.

It can also help participating countries introduce their traditions, heritage and tourist attractions to a wider audience.

Lahore Follows Major SCO Cities

Several major cities have previously held the Tourism and Cultural Capital title.

Varanasi, India, held the position for 2022-23.

Almaty, Kazakhstan, followed for 2023-24.

Qingdao, China, served as the cultural capital for 2024-25.

Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, currently holds the title for 2025-26.

Lahore will take over for the 2026-27 period.

Opportunity for Pakistan Tourism

Lahore is one of Pakistan’s best-known cultural and historic cities.

The city attracts visitors with its historic architecture, traditional food, arts and cultural landmarks.
