England manager Thomas Tuchel rejected claims of a World Cup curse after Argentina staged a dramatic comeback to beat England 2-1 in the semi-finals, ending the Three Lions’ hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel dismissed suggestions that history or superstition played any role in England’s latest World Cup exit. He said every tournament features different players, coaches, opponents and circumstances, making comparisons with previous campaigns irrelevant.

Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute, raising hopes of a long-awaited place in the final. However, Argentina quickly shifted the momentum, increased the intensity of their attacks and scored twice late in the match to book their place in the championship decider.

Tuchel acknowledged that England deserved to take the lead but admitted the goal changed the entire rhythm of the contest. He said Argentina attacked with greater confidence and freedom after falling behind, while England became increasingly cautious and failed to regain control of possession.

The England manager described the encounter as two completely different games, with the momentum changing entirely after his side opened the scoring.

Despite facing criticism for his substitutions and defensive tactics after England went ahead, Tuchel stood by his decisions and accepted full responsibility. He said criticism comes with the job and stressed that nobody can say with certainty whether different tactical choices would have produced a different outcome.

England captain Harry Kane also shared his disappointment, saying he felt devastated for the players, coaching staff and supporters after the semi-final defeat.

Kane praised England’s overall performance but admitted the team struggled to contain Argentina’s relentless pressure after taking the lead. He explained that England intended to chase a second goal instead of protecting their advantage, but Argentina’s attacking intensity prevented them from executing that plan.

The Bayern Munich striker refused to criticise Tuchel, insisting that the entire squad shares responsibility for both victories and defeats. He added that people would have praised the manager’s tactical decisions if they had delivered a positive result and urged everyone to remain united.

Looking ahead, Kane said England are edging closer to major tournament success but still need to find the missing ingredient to win football’s biggest prize. He also declined to say whether he plans to play at the next World Cup, explaining that he will assess his future year by year while continuing to give everything for the England national team.
