Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday said Pakistan has “endured and prevailed” through adversity and remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty, as he addressed a ceremony marking the first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq in Karachi.
Speaking at the event, the chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party said the country had passed through a period of uncertainty but emerged stronger due to unity and resilience.
“About a year ago, Pakistan was on the brink of uncertainty,” Bilawal said, referring to heightened tensions with India. “Despite difficult circumstances, Pakistan stood its ground,” he added, crediting national unity for overcoming the crisis.
He emphasized that Pakistan’s history since 1947 has been shaped by struggle and sacrifice, adding that the victory symbolized not just military strength but determination and courage. “From the mountains in the north to the shores of the Arabian Sea, the nation stood united,” he said.
Bilawal praised the role of the Pakistan Armed Forces for defending the country with “courage, discipline and dignity,” while also acknowledging diplomatic efforts in presenting Pakistan’s stance globally.
He reiterated that Pakistan seeks peace but will not compromise on its sovereignty. “We have never desired war; we have always preferred peace,” he said, while cautioning against “elements abroad” attempting to distort historical narratives.
Addressing the same ceremony, Murad Ali Shah said Pakistan responded swiftly to Indian actions during the 2025 escalation, claiming the country demonstrated military superiority within hours. He rejected claims circulated by Indian media regarding damage to Karachi, stating that Pakistan’s defense remained fully intact.
Shah also highlighted the development of Pakistan’s nuclear and missile capabilities, crediting Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto for their roles in strengthening national defense.
Meanwhile, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon described the occasion as a moment of national pride and unity, saying the armed forces delivered a strong response during the conflict.
Background to the Conflict
Tensions between Pakistan and India escalated following the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, which resulted in 26 deaths. India blamed Pakistan for the incident, an allegation Islamabad rejected.
The situation worsened with diplomatic and military actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India and cross-border missile strikes in May 2025 targeting areas in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan responded with military action, including Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, targeting Indian installations. A ceasefire was later announced on May 10, 2025, by Donald Trump, following diplomatic efforts, and confirmed by both sides.
Bilawal concluded his address by urging reflection and responsibility. “This is a time for reflection, not arrogance,” he said.
