Karachi (Staff Reporter)—The Anoush Foundation installed two submersible water pumps in underprivileged areas of Karachi to address the shortage of clean drinking water. These pumps were set up as ongoing charity in the name of renowned businessman and social worker Anoush Ahmed’s late father, Nadeem Muhammad Ahmed. The total cost of the project was approximately 650,000 Pakistani rupees, benefiting around 200 people daily. This initiative will provide relief to households where water scarcity has become a part of everyday life.
Under the principle of serving humanity, one of the two locations was chosen to assist the Christian community. According to Anoush Ahmed, the purpose of this initiative is to meet human needs without discrimination based on religion, sect, or area, reflecting Karachi’s shared realities and the dignity of every household. The first location is Sector 11-H North Karachi (near St. Joseph Church, Christian community), an area that has suffered severe water shortage for the last 15 years due to the water table falling below 250 feet. To ensure a durable and repairable system, the team drilled a borehole 350 feet deep with an 8-inch diameter and installed a submersible pump designed for continuous use. Usually, 5-inch bores become unusable within one or two years and are irreparable, whereas the 8-inch bore allows for future repairs and parts replacement, securing the donor’s investment.
Along with the bore and pump, a complete water supply system was created, including a 1000-liter water tank, two taps, and quality plumbing to enable organized access to clean water. Reverend Father Warier Wilson Gori inaugurated the project at a simple ceremony hosted by Anoush Foundation. Special prayers were offered for Anoush Ahmed and his late father during the event. Local community members expressed hope that the water supply would improve health, save time, and reduce financial burdens.
The second location is Al-Madina Colony, Sector 11, Orangi Town (Muslim area). The pump was installed in an area where municipal water is provided only once a month for four hours, which is insufficient to fill underground or rooftop tanks in homes. Many families have to buy water, spending over approximately 1,500 rupees monthly. With the new submersible pump, residents will now have daily access to water, reducing expenses, stabilizing household routines, and saving valuable time parents and children spend managing water.
