In his message for World Refugees Day, observed on Saturday, the prime minister said Pakistan stood with the international community in expressing solidarity with displaced people across the world.
He said the day serves to promote compassion for refugees and highlight the challenges they continue to face. However, he added that for Pakistan, support for refugees extends beyond symbolic observance and reflects a humanitarian commitment maintained for decades.
Referring to developments following 1979, PM Shehbaz said millions of Afghans crossed into Pakistan to escape conflict and insecurity.
Despite limited resources, Pakistan opened its borders and supported Afghan refugees and successive generations through care and humanitarian assistance, he said.
The prime minister noted that Pakistan established refugee settlements and camps and remained among the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries for more than four decades.
He said generations of Afghan families had lived in Pakistan with dignity and stressed that lasting solutions depended on peace, stability and economic resilience in Afghanistan.
