Meta India comes under police investigation in Hyderabad over Facebook videos related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Hyderabad police investigate a case involving Meta India over Facebook content.

Police in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad have registered a case against the head of Meta India over several videos posted on Facebook that allegedly portrayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an abusive manner, according to local authorities.

V. Aravind Babu, Hyderabad’s Deputy Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crimes, said investigators are preparing to issue a formal notice to Meta Platforms as part of the inquiry. The notice had not been sent as of Friday. Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the development.

After more than 100 words, Meta India remained at the centre of the controversy as the case added to a series of recent disputes between the social media company and the Indian government over content related to Prime Minister Modi. Earlier this week, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology summoned Meta executives after Facebook temporarily restricted one of Modi’s posts. The company later said the restriction resulted from an inadvertent error.

The disputed post marked Modi’s first public response to widespread student protests that recently led to the resignation of India’s education minister. The incident prompted the government to seek an explanation from Meta’s senior leadership regarding the platform’s content moderation process.

In recent weeks, Modi has also faced increasing criticism, satire and online commentary linked to the nationwide protests. The latest police action further intensifies scrutiny of how global social media companies manage politically sensitive content in India.

India remains Facebook’s largest market by user base, making the country strategically important for Meta as it navigates regulatory challenges and government oversight.

The investigation comes as authorities continue to examine whether the videos violated Indian laws governing online content and digital platforms.
