Karachi is set to celebrate International Dance Day with a vibrant cultural performance as renowned choreographer and kathakar Mohsin Babar presents his acclaimed production Aqsaam-e-Naach: Andaaz-e-Kathak at the National Academy of Performing Arts on April 29 at 8:00 pm.

The production blends classical Kathak with contemporary and fusion dance forms, offering a dynamic exploration of rhythm, expression, and storytelling. Through a series of choreographed pieces performed by his troupe, the show aims to highlight the versatility and depth of Kathak while making the classical art form more accessible to modern audiences.
At the core of the performance is a thematic reinterpretation of the ghungroo (ankle bells), traditionally worn by Kathak dancers. Babar repositions the instrument as a central artistic element, challenging social stigma and presenting it as an integral part of musical expression—comparable to instruments such as the tabla in classical percussion.
Mohsin Babar, with over 27 years of experience in dance, is widely recognized for bridging tradition and innovation in Pakistan’s performing arts landscape. His training began under legendary Kathak maestro Hamid Hussain Shaad Jaipuri, followed by mentorship from Shado Maharaj. He later refined his skills at the National School of Drama in India under Rajendra Gangani and studied contemporary dance in Germany with Nicole Silo.
Beyond performance, Babar is also the founder of the Kathak School of Performing Arts, an institution committed to inclusivity and cultural preservation. The school provides full scholarships to students from underprivileged backgrounds and follows a traditional guru-shishya training model. It also works to expand access to classical dance by organizing performances in smaller towns and rural areas.
The upcoming show at NAPA is part of International Dance Day celebrations and is expected to draw artists, students, and cultural enthusiasts. Organizers describe the performance not merely as entertainment, but as a reimagining of Kathak’s identity and its emotional and cultural resonance in contemporary society.
