Beijing : How did the concept of frozen food begin? According to historians, around 3000 BC, the ancient Chinese used to store food in ice houses during the winter. Similarly, the Romans used to store piles of ice and snow in their cellars to protect goods from spoilage. Modern frozen foods were founded by American inventor Clarence Bird’s Eye. In 1912, he traveled to the Canadian province of Labrador, where he saw the locals quickly freezing fresh fish and meat in the bitter cold. This rapid freezing process preserved the taste and texture of the food. This observation proved revolutionary for him. Upon returning to the United States, he began experiments and invented a method in which food was rapidly frozen by placing it between metal plates at extremely low temperatures.
