CHINA : Researchers have confirmed a large meteorite impact that created a prominent crater in southern China’s Guangdong province about 10,000 years ago. Junlin Crater, located near the city of Zhaoqing, is the fifth confirmed meteorite impact site in China and the first in the southern region of the country. The crater, measured at approximately 2,950 feet, further suggests that it contained the explosive force equivalent to dozens of atomic bombs. It had a significant impact on the surrounding environment, changing the structure of the Earth, and the local ecosystem. Jinlin Crater was recently described in the journal Matter and Radiation at Extremes, and its formation has been attributed to a BOLD impact. In this regard, Chen Ming, a researcher at the Center for High Pressure Science and Technology, said that the collision released energy equivalent to 600,000 tons of TNT, which is comparable to the power of 40 Hiroshima atomic bombs. It has also been observed that a large asteroid could have a transformative effect on the surrounding environment during this period.
