Karachi Confirms Second Fatal Case of Brain-Eating Amoeba in 2025

Karachi has reported its second death this year caused by the brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, health officials confirmed on Wednesday. The victim, a 23-year-old man from Orangi Town, developed symptoms on May 28 and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he did not survive.

This latest case has heightened health concerns in the city as summer temperatures rise. Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm, untreated freshwater and can enter the body through the nose—often during swimming or using unchlorinated water—leading to a fatal brain infection known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

Medical experts are urging the public to take preventive steps, such as properly chlorinating household water tanks and avoiding nasal water exposure during ablution, swimming, or bathing. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and are emphasizing the need for improved hygiene and water safety to prevent more cases.
