ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has provided an important update regarding the launch of Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service, in Pakistan, as reported by ARY News.

During a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, the PTA Chairman revealed that Starlink applied for a license on February 24, 2022, and is currently coordinating with a new regulatory body.

For Starlink to commence operations in Pakistan, it must first complete its registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the Pakistan Space Bureau (PSB). The PTA Chairman assured that further actions would proceed once the registration is finalized.

In addition to Starlink, Shanghai Space Technology is also entering the Pakistani market, which is expected to boost internet connectivity and drive technological advancements in the country.

The PTA clarified that it cannot issue Starlink’s operating license until it receives clearance from the government. The chairman confirmed that Starlink has pledged to comply with Pakistan’s regulatory framework and will not circumvent any official procedures.

The committee also decided to summon the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) to discuss space technology regulations, raising concerns about PTA’s delegation of responsibilities to other entities.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, recently stated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he is awaiting approval from the Pakistani government for Starlink’s launch. This statement came in response to a request from a Pakistani social media user, Sanam Jamali, who urged Musk to introduce the service to improve connectivity and provide better opportunities for the people of Pakistan.

About Starlink

Starlink, a project by SpaceX, is a satellite-based internet service designed to provide high-speed, global connectivity through a network of small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). This technology aims to offer reliable internet services, especially in remote and underserved regions where traditional broadband options are limited.

The Starlink system boasts latency as low as 20 milliseconds, comparable to many fiber-optic networks. Each satellite is equipped with a phased array antenna, enabling simultaneous communication with multiple users and ensuring flexible, high-capacity connectivity.

With the potential to revolutionize global internet access, Starlink promises to bridge the digital divide and enhance opportunities for individuals and businesses worldwide.
