Senate Elections: Nomination Papers Scrutiny on March 19

The scrutiny of nomination papers for the Senate elections, scheduled to be held on April 2, will take place on March 19, according to Pakistani state media. The deadline for submitting candidatures has already passed, with members of the provincial assemblies and the National Assembly set to elect senators for various seats.

The Senate, Pakistan’s upper house of parliament, plays a crucial role in discussing and voting on laws alongside other public representatives. Senators are elected for a term of six years, with half of the senators retiring every three years and new members elected to replace them.

The upcoming elections will see members of the four provincial assemblies electing senators for seven general seats, two women seats, and two seats for technocrats, including ulema, from each province. Additionally, one seat for non-Muslims from both Punjab and Sindh provinces will be filled. In the federal capital, members of the National Assembly will elect members of the Senate for one general seat and one seat for technocrats, including religious scholars.

A total of 48 seats are up for grabs in the Senate elections, as four seats reserved for erstwhile federally administered tribal areas have already been abolished following their merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Several prominent figures have submitted nominations for the elections, including former caretaker prime minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Finance Minister Aurangzeb Khan, Ahad Cheema, and Mustafa Ramday from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, has fielded candidates such as Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed Khan, Mirza Afridi, Irfan Saleem, and Khurram Zeeshan.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), part of the ruling coalition at the center, has nominated nine candidates for general seats, three each for women and technocrats, and two for minorities. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that the PPP would release a final list of its candidates after the scrutiny of nomination papers.
