A Testament to the Beauty of American Democracy The 2025 elections in New York and Virginia revealed a truth the world must always remember: democracy functions in America. Two Muslims—Zohran Mamdani, now the Mayor of New York City, and Dr. Ghazala Hashmi, the newly elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia—were chosen for the highest state and local offices through the free will of the people.
Their victories symbolize not only their personal achievements but also the greatness of an American democracy that celebrates diversity, rewards merit, and gives every voice a vote. This wouldn’t be possible in communist or autocratic regimes, where minorities—especially Muslims—are systematically silenced, as seen in Xinjiang, where millions suffer under surveillance and oppression for their faith [1].
In contrast, America’s lasting democracy allowed both leaders—immigrants and children of immigrants—to rise through public trust, not political decree.
Freedom, Faith, and the Power of Engagement
Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York City, with over 50 percent of the vote, makes him the youngest mayor in a century and the first Muslim of Indian and South Asian descent to lead the city [2]. His campaign connected with the hopes of working families and immigrant communities who see the city as a land of opportunity.
In Virginia, Dr. Ghazala Hashmi’s election as Lieutenant Governor, with 53.7 percent of the vote, marks a significant milestone. She becomes the first Indian Muslim and South Asian woman to hold statewide office, symbolizing the increasing acceptance of faith, merit, and intellect as measures of leadership—not ancestry or background [3].
Their success, achieved through democratic choice, reflects a political system that embraces Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, and everyone else. This is the heart of America—a nation where faith enriches life, not creates barriers.
Democracy as an Economic and Moral Force
The greatness of America is rooted in its economic inclusivity and moral balance. Immigrants from every continent—Muslims included—came here not for socialism or government control but for freedom, entrepreneurship, and equal opportunities. It is this free-market democracy that transforms ordinary people into innovators, scientists, and public servants.
Now that Muslim leaders have taken leadership roles, it is time for action, not division. New York must avoid repeating the policy mistakes of “defund the NYPD,” which threatened safety and discouraged business growth. Instead, it should work on rebuilding trust in law enforcement, ensuring community safety, and boosting the city’s economy through cooperation, not protests.
Dr. Hashmi’s leadership in Virginia can serve as an example of moderation and efficiency—demonstrating how faith and fairness can coexist within a government guided by reason, not radicalism.
Beyond Party Lines: The Promise of Unity
While both leaders were elected as Democrats, their success goes beyond party lines. Most voters supported them not for ideology but for integrity and inclusion. This shows that in America, party affiliations don’t determine the future of either the native citizen or the immigrant.
Immigrants have been essential to this nation’s progress—from developing its industries to defending its values. The rise of Mamdani and Hashmi reminds us that democracy, when protected, continues to lift those who believe in its principles. Their current challenge is to show that representation alone is not enough—tangible results must follow it.
America has once again demonstrated that its democracy is vibrant, inclusive, and capable of self-correction. It is time for these leaders to reinforce, not weaken, the system that provided them their platform—and to serve as an example for all who believe in liberty under the law.
