Karachi : Subsequent to the signing of sanitary and phytosanitary protocol in october 2022,TDAP has organized maidan delegation of cherry buyers from China to Gilgit Baltistan. The delegation of 15 members was received by government officials, representatives of all chambers of commerce and Advisor ro CM at Sost border on May 15, 2023.TDAP organized a seminar on product processing and export potential of cherry for chinese delegation and traders of cherry to enlighten on sanitary and phyto sanitary requirements under the protocol.
\Representative from department of agriculture informed on agronomic practices and types of cherry cultivated in Gilgit. Representative from DPP apprised the audience on SPS requirements under the newly signed protocol. Additional Collector Customs briefed the audience on regulatory requirements for export of cherry to china through sost dry port whereas representative from TDAP highlighted the export potential of cherry in China’s market.He further highlighted almost every home and GB has a cherry tree and the collective production of the province is 4500 MT per anum.
Pakistan’s cherry is grown with fresh water melting from rhe glaciers, it does not use any fertilizer or pesticide. Therefore, it meets the requirement of organic fruit which the world is presently very keen and buying at premium price. If the exports of cherries are started to China, this would change the life’s of people of Gilgit and bring prosperity in the region. During the seminar different chambers of commerce and women entrepreneurs showcased different types of cherries, apricot, honey and other products.Thdreafter delegation called on Mr Kazim Maisam, Minister for Agriculture, livestock and fisheries where a detailed discussion was held on agriculture produce of GB including cherry, apricot, mulberry and potatoes.
He encouraged the delegation for investment in the region specially in value added products of fruit.The delegation visited orchards in Nomal, Jalalabad, rahimabad and Ganish . The delegation also visited the cold storage and packing house in Rahim abad region of GB. TDAP has arranged B2B meetings for the delegation on May 18 wherein business MoUs and contracts are expected.
