Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah held a meeting with K-Electric Chairman Shahryar Chishti to discuss power supply challenges in Karachi, particularly the issue of prolonged load-shedding in low-income areas during the summer season.

The meeting was also attended by K-Electric CEO Syed Taha, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, the Secretary Energy, and other senior officials.
During the discussion, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed concern over the difficulties faced by citizens in poorer neighbourhoods due to extended load-shedding. He stressed that reducing outages in low-income areas should be a priority and called for practical solutions to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for the underprivileged.
He further directed the Energy Department to explore options for providing cheaper electricity, including a targeted subsidy mechanism for Karachi consumers. The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of utilising Thar coal to generate low-cost electricity and supply it to K-Electric at reduced rates, ensuring affordable power delivery in marginalized areas.
Murad Ali Shah also stated that the provincial government is considering a partnership model with K-Electric to provide reasonably priced electricity to industrial zones, aiming to support economic activity in the city.
K-Electric Chairman Shahryar Chishti assured the Chief Minister of the company’s willingness to cooperate with the Sindh government in addressing energy challenges and improving service delivery.
He also highlighted the importance of increasing low-cost power generation to ensure long-term sustainability and affordability.
As part of the decisions taken in the meeting, the Chief Minister directed the formation of a committee comprising the Commissioner Karachi, Secretary Energy, and K-Electric CEO. The committee will develop proposals for providing affordable and uninterrupted electricity to low-income areas of Karachi.
The Chief Minister’s spokesperson said the initiative aims to reduce energy inequality in the city and improve living conditions for economically vulnerable communities.
