RUSSIA : Russia has announced the closure of the American messaging application WhatsApp, accusing it of violating domestic laws. Russian authorities say WhatsApp has failed to comply with Russian laws. Just days ago, Russia also restricted access to the rival messaging app Telegram. The Russian government is trying to move users to the local messaging service “Max,” which does not provide end-to-end encryption. According to some experts, this move by the Russian government could be a potential means of surveillance. On the other hand, critics say that these restrictions are part of an effort by Russian authorities to tighten control over the internet and increase surveillance of citizens’ online activities.
